2025 NIH Global Doctoral Partnerships Annual Research Colloquium
Join us for the IBRA 2025 Colloquium at St. Catherine’s College for an exciting week of presentations by the most promising biomedical research trainees!
Event Details
The International Biomedical Research Alliance (IBRA) and NIH Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program at the National Institutes of Health are delighted to welcome you to the NIH Global Doctoral Partnerships Annual Research Colloquium (Colloquium).
When and Where
The Colloquium will be held at St. Catherine’s College, the University of Oxford, from July 15-20, 2025.
Although one of the youngest Oxford Colleges, they trace their roots back to 1868, when a ‘Delegacy for Non-Collegiate Students’ was formed. This Delegacy enabled students to gain an Oxford education without the prohibitive costs of college membership.
The college boasts a strong academic community and beautiful surroundings, making it a perfect venue for academic conferences and gatherings.
Hosting the Colloquium at St. Catherine’s College provides an inspiring environment for fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, set against the backdrop of Oxford’s rich academic tradition.

The Colloquium is scheduled for July 15-20, 2025, featuring a diverse array of events aimed at fostering collaboration and highlighting innovative research. Travel and arrival days for staff, students, and mentors will take place on July 15-16th, setting the stage for an exciting week ahead.
Keynote Speaker
Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe is a Nobel Laureate and one of the world’s leading physician-scientists, celebrated for his pioneering research on the mechanisms by which cells sense and respond to oxygen levels. His groundbreaking discoveries in cellular oxygen sensing, particularly the identification of hypoxia-inducible factors (HIF), have transformed our understanding of how cells adapt to hypoxic conditions. These findings are crucial, not only in basic biological science but also in developing treatments for diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and anemia.
Educated at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and St. Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College, London, Sir Peter pursued both clinical training in nephrology and academic research. He is currently the Director of Clinical Research at the Francis Crick Institute in London and also holds a leadership position at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. In these roles, he continues to advance research at the intersection of medicine and biology, driving forward the translation of his discoveries into clinical applications.
In 2019, Sir Peter was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine alongside William G. Kaelin Jr. and Gregg L. Semenza for their work in oxygen sensing. His distinguished career has earned him numerous accolades, including knighthood, election as a Fellow of the Royal Society, and recognition by various international academic and medical bodies.
Sir Peter’s influence extends beyond his research as he remains committed to mentoring young scientists and fostering a collaborative environment in global biomedical research. His keynote lecture at the IBRA 2025 Colloquium will provide unique insights into the future of biomedical science and its potential to address pressing health challenges through innovative research.
